When a dispersed particle moves through a liquid medium, mostly a thin, electric dipole layer adheres to its surface.

Since this layer influences the movement of the particle, is the measured so called hydrodynamic particle diameter with dynamic light scattering (DLS) mostly above the diameter of that measured for example with a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The thickness of the layer depends on various factors, such as the electrical conductivity of the liquid.
